Assam Police seized three gold biscuits weighing approximately 439 grams and apprehended one individual in Cachar district on Sunday, in an operation aimed at curbing gold smuggling, officials confirmed.

Khamneu Munluah (32), a resident of Lamka in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, was arrested near Ramnagar bypass under the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station, following a tip-off. The gold biscuits were recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses, according to Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta.

The seized gold was reportedly being smuggled from Manipur and was intended to be delivered near ISBT Silchar.

The police have initiated further legal proceedings in the case.

This seizure comes just a day after Cachar police carried out a major drug bust in the Saptagram area under Dholai Police Station, where they confiscated 1.22 kg of heroin valued at Rs 6.22 crore and arrested two individuals from Churachandpur, Manipur—Michael Lairemruot and his wife Merina Neitinphal.

The contraband was concealed in 99 soap cases hidden inside modified chambers of a vehicle. Preliminary tests confirmed the substance to be heroin, and further investigations are ongoing.

The back-to-back operations underscore growing concerns over cross-border smuggling of gold and narcotics from neighboring states, with Cachar district emerging as a key transit point.
